Does my own insurance cover me when I stay in an Airbnb or VRBO?
When you stay in an Airbnb, VRBO, or similar rental, the host’s short-term rental policy is there to protect the host’s property and liability. It does not extend to you, your belongings, or anything you are responsible for as a guest. Your protection comes from coverage you already carry, plus a few trip-specific options.
Your homeowners or renters policy travels with you
A standard homeowners or renters policy usually includes off-premises personal property coverage, which can apply to belongings you bring on a trip, such as a laptop or luggage taken from the rental. The same policy’s personal liability coverage can follow you as well, so if you accidentally injure someone or damage property away from home, it may respond. Limits and deductibles still apply, and high-value items such as jewelry or cameras may need a separate scheduled endorsement to be fully covered.
Damage you cause to the rental
If you accidentally damage the rental, the cost is generally handled one of two ways: through your personal liability coverage, or through the booking platform (Airbnb can charge for damage or hold a security deposit, and VRBO offers damage protection added at booking). A host can also pursue a guest directly for damage beyond those programs, which is where your own liability coverage matters.
What personal insurance will not do
Your home or renters policy does not reimburse a cancelled trip, a missed flight, or medical care while traveling. Those gaps are what travel insurance is built for, and a credit card used to book the stay may already include limited trip and rental protections that overlap with it.
