Motorcycle FAQs

What are Georgia’s motorcycle insurance requirements?

Quick answer: Georgia does not require motorcycle insurance but the same fault-state liability principles apply.

Georgia requires every motorcycle rider to carry liability insurance, just like drivers of cars. You must meet the state’s minimum limits before you can legally ride on public roads.

As of now, Georgia’s minimum motorcycle liability limits are:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury to one person.
  • $50,000 for bodily injury to two or more people in one accident.
  • $25,000 for property damage.

This is the same 25/50/25 standard Georgia applies to auto insurance. Liability coverage pays for injuries and damage you cause to others. It does not pay to fix your own bike or treat your own injuries, so most riders add more protection.

Common add-ons include collision and comprehensive coverage for your motorcycle, plus uninsured motorist coverage in case the other rider has no insurance. Given how serious motorcycle injuries can be, many Georgia riders also choose limits well above the state minimum.

For example, if you cause a crash that injures another driver and the medical bills reach $80,000, a minimum 25/50/25 policy would leave you personally owing the $55,000 the policy will not cover. Higher limits protect your savings and assets.
