Motorcycle FAQs

Does motorcycle insurance cover injuries to a passenger in Georgia?

Quick answer: Motorcycle policies can include guest passenger liability coverage and medical payments for passengers.

It can, but how a passenger is covered depends on your policy. In Georgia, the liability portion of your motorcycle insurance generally covers injuries to a passenger you carry, because the passenger is treated like any other person you might injure. Still, there are important limits to understand.

Which coverage pays a hurt passenger depends on fault and the policy:

  • Liability coverage can pay a passenger’s medical bills if you are at fault in a crash, up to your bodily injury limit.
  • Guest passenger coverage is offered by some insurers as a specific add-on to make sure passengers are clearly protected.
  • Medical payments coverage, if you add it, can help with passenger and rider medical costs regardless of fault.

The catch is your limit. Georgia’s minimum bodily injury coverage is $25,000 per person, and serious motorcycle injuries often cost far more than that. If your passenger’s bills exceed your limit, you could be personally responsible for the rest.

For example, if you take a friend for a ride near Lake Lanier and a crash leaves them with $60,000 in medical bills, a minimum-limit policy would cover $25,000 and leave $35,000 unpaid. Higher limits or added medical payments coverage would close that gap.
