What is AirCover for Guests?
What is AirCover for Guests?
AirCover for Guests is Airbnb’s guest protection program, covering booking failures, listing misrepresentations, and check-in problems. It does not cover guest injuries, personal property, or trip cancellations for personal reasons. It is not travel insurance.
What does AirCover for Guests cover?
The program addresses situations where a booking does not match what was advertised or does not go as planned at check-in:
- Last-minute host cancellation: Airbnb provides rebooking assistance and covers the price difference if a comparable replacement listing costs more
- Listing misrepresentation: if the property is materially different from what was described (wrong location, fewer bedrooms than advertised, missing a key amenity), Airbnb assists with rebooking
- Check-in failure: if a guest cannot access the property at the agreed check-in time, Airbnb steps in with rebooking support
- 72-hour reporting window: guests have 72 hours after check-in to report a qualifying issue and request a remedy
- 24-hour safety line: a dedicated line for guests who feel unsafe at a property during a stay
What does AirCover for Guests not cover?
AirCover for Guests has no medical payments provision. A guest injured at the property has a liability claim against the host, not a direct payout through AirCover for Guests. That claim would be handled through the host’s Airbnb Host Liability Insurance (up to $1 million per stay, underwritten by Generali US Branch in the United States) or through the host’s own insurance policy. For example, if a guest slips on a wet patio and sprains an ankle, there is no AirCover payout for those medical costs, and the guest’s recourse is a claim against the host’s liability insurance or their own health coverage.
Additional losses outside the program’s scope:
- Guest personal property: theft, damage, or loss of a guest’s belongings at the property
- Trip cancellation before arrival for personal reasons, including illness, work obligations, or weather at the origin
- Credit card disputes, which are a separate process from AirCover
- Travel supplier insolvency
How does AirCover for Guests compare to travel insurance?
Travel insurance purchased separately can cover trip cancellation, emergency medical expenses, medical evacuation, and lost baggage: categories that fall outside AirCover for Guests entirely. The two serve different purposes and can coexist for the same trip. For example, a guest who purchases a separate travel policy before an Airbnb stay would have trip cancellation and emergency medical coverage that AirCover for Guests does not provide.
How does AirCover for Guests differ from AirCover for Hosts?
AirCover for Hosts and AirCover for Guests are separate programs that run alongside the same booking. AirCover for Hosts covers the host’s potential liability to third parties and guest-caused property damage. AirCover for Guests addresses booking accuracy and check-in access from the guest’s perspective. Neither functions as travel insurance for the guest.
