In Alabama
How does this work in Alabama?
Alabama does not require watercraft insurance by statute, but lenders and marinas, particularly those on Lake Martin, Smith Lake, and Lake Guntersville, typically require liability coverage as a condition of a slip or loan. Alabama follows pure contributory negligence rather than a comparative-fault rule (Golden v. McCurry, 392 So. 2d 815, Ala. 1980): a claimant found even slightly at fault in an accident can be completely barred from recovery, a stricter standard than most states use, which is exactly why personal umbrella coverage carries added weight here -- Alabama's 25/50/25 auto minimums sit well below the underlying limits most carriers require before writing a $1 million umbrella layer. RV coverage follows the vehicle's registration and use pattern: a motorhome used as a primary residence in Alabama carries different underwriting criteria than one used seasonally, and Alabama titles a motorized RV the same as any other vehicle. For jewelry, homeowners policies typically carry a $1,000 to $2,500 sublimit on unscheduled jewelry; a scheduled personal articles floater removes that sublimit and usually covers mysterious disappearance. Carriers available through us for these lines include Jewelers Mutual for fine jewelry, RLI for standalone personal umbrella to $5 million, Progressive for watercraft and collector vehicles, Foremost and American Modern for RVs and specialty personal property, and Chubb and PURE for high-net-worth personal collections including fine art and wine.
If You Need to File a Claim
Claims tips
First Steps
Report the loss or incident to your carrier immediately. Other Personal lines, excess, scheduled, specialty, often have specific notice requirements tied to the coverage type. The claims process for niche personal lines varies more than standard auto or homeowners, so read your policy's reporting provisions before calling.
What to Document
Document the loss the same way you would for any personal property or liability claim: photographs, written account of what happened, police report if applicable, and any receipts or appraisals relevant to the item or coverage involved. When in doubt, document more than you think you need.
Common Mistakes
Assuming a claim under a specialty personal policy works the same as a homeowners claim. Delaying notice because the coverage type feels unusual. Not checking whether a deductible applies differently than your standard policies.
When to Call Us
Any time you have a loss on a specialty or non-standard personal policy. We can help you identify the right carrier contact and walk through the reporting requirements with you.
