Does Airbnb’s AirCover replace the need for STR insurance?
No. Airbnb’s AirCover does not replace the need for proper short-term rental (STR) insurance. AirCover is a helpful layer of protection that comes with hosting, but it is not a full insurance policy, and relying on it alone can leave you exposed.
AirCover offers host damage protection and host liability coverage for incidents tied to a guest’s stay. The problem is that it has conditions, limits, and exclusions. It may not cover certain types of property, ongoing wear and tear, loss of income when your place is unbookable, or claims that fall outside Airbnb’s specific rules and timelines. It also generally only applies to bookings made through Airbnb, not other platforms or direct guests.
A dedicated short-term rental policy, or a landlord policy with a short-term rental endorsement, fills those gaps. It can cover the building, your contents, lost rental income, and broader liability, on your terms rather than the platform’s.
For example, suppose a storm damages your Savannah rental and you cannot host guests for two months, losing $6,000 in bookings. AirCover is unlikely to reimburse that lost income, but a short-term rental policy with loss-of-income coverage could.
