Do I need uninsured motorist coverage in Alabama?

Uninsured motorist (UM) coverage must be offered on every Alabama auto policy and stays on the policy unless the named insured rejects it in writing (Code of Alabama Section 32-7-23). An estimated 14.2% of Alabama drivers were uninsured in 2022, and because Alabama’s contributory-negligence rule can bar an injured driver from recovering anything from an at-fault driver found even slightly at fault, UM coverage is often the more reliable path to being paid after a crash someone else caused.
