Does homeowners insurance cover a horse in Georgia?
Usually not for the exposures that matter most. Standard homeowners liability often treats horse-related claims as an exclusion, and it does not pay the animal's own value if the horse dies or needs expensive veterinary care.
Homeowners liability coverage pays for injury or property damage a homeowner is legally responsible for, up to the policy limit. Insurers commonly classify horses, along with other livestock, as an agricultural or business exposure rather than a typical household risk, and exclude it from the liability section, particularly if the owner boards other people's horses or teaches lessons for pay. Even a single personally owned pleasure horse can fall under an animal liability exclusion or a reduced sublimit, depending on the carrier and policy form; details on what a standard policy does and does not include are on the homeowners insurance page.
### Where the exclusion shows up
Example: A homeowner in Alpharetta keeps one horse in a backyard pasture. A neighbor's child reaches through the fence to pet the horse and is kicked, requiring stitches. The homeowner's carrier examines the claim and denies it under the policy's animal liability exclusion, leaving the homeowner responsible for the claim directly. Equine liability coverage, sold separately and built for horse-related risk, is designed to respond to exactly this kind of incident. It is outlined on the equine insurance page.
Homeowners insurance also does not include mortality coverage, the type of policy that pays out if the horse itself dies. See does Georgia require horse owners to have equine insurance for how that coverage works and how it differs from Georgia's liability statute. A deductible, the amount paid out of pocket before a policy pays the remainder of a covered claim, applies to equine policies the same way it does to homeowners policies; see the deductible glossary entry for how that works.
A coverage review can confirm what a current homeowners policy leaves out for a specific property and horse. Schedule a coverage review.
