Does my auto or homeowners insurance cover my RV in Georgia?
Sometimes, but usually not fully. Whether your auto or homeowners policy covers your RV in Georgia depends on the type of RV and how it is used. For most owners, a dedicated RV policy is the right answer.
RV coverage depends on whether the rig drives itself:
- Motorhomes (Class A, B, or C) are self-powered, so they need their own auto-style policy. Your regular car insurance does not extend to them.
- Travel trailers and fifth wheels are towed. Your auto insurance liability may follow the trailer while you are towing it, but it will not pay to repair the trailer itself if it is damaged.
- Personal belongings inside the RV may get limited coverage from your homeowners insurance, but typically only a small amount and not while the RV is in use far from home.
A standalone RV policy fills these gaps. It can cover the RV body, attached equipment, your liability, and even contents and emergency lodging if the RV breaks down on a trip.
For example, if a Georgia couple tows a $35,000 travel trailer to the North Georgia mountains and a tree limb crushes the roof, their auto liability would not pay a dime toward the trailer. A dedicated RV or trailer policy would cover the repair, minus the deductible.
