Is my motorcycle covered under my Georgia auto policy?
No. A personal auto policy in Georgia does not cover a motorcycle. Auto policies are written around private passenger vehicles, typically defined as four-wheeled cars, SUVs, and light trucks, and motorcycles fall outside that definition entirely. A separate motorcycle policy is required to insure the bike itself, the liability exposure from riding it, and any custom parts or equipment added to it.
This surprises some drivers because a single auto policy can cover multiple cars in a household. It feels natural to assume a motorcycle would fit under the same umbrella. It does not, because motorcycles carry a different risk profile than cars: less physical protection for the rider, different theft rates, and different repair and parts costs. Insurers price and underwrite that risk through a dedicated motorcycle policy rather than an auto policy add-on.
For example, a driver who insures a car and later buys a motorcycle, assuming it is automatically added to the existing auto policy the way a second car might be, could learn after an accident that the motorcycle was never covered at all. The gap is not a paperwork delay. It is a complete absence of coverage until a motorcycle policy is put in place.
A dedicated motorcycle policy also covers things an auto policy was never built to handle, such as scheduled coverage for custom parts, including aftermarket exhausts, custom paint, upgraded seats, or added chrome. Those items typically need to be listed on the policy to be covered at full value after a loss.
General auto coverage details are available at auto insurance for comparison, but motorcycle-specific coverage is its own product. See Georgia motorcycle insurance and motorcycle insurance for what a standalone policy includes. Georgia also requires riders to hold a Class M license endorsement, covered in do I need a special license to ride a motorcycle in Georgia.
Anyone who owns a motorcycle and is not certain whether it is properly insured can confirm current coverage through a coverage review, or compare carriers on the carriers page.
